The Private Commissions side of Epic has evolved naturally from our work as editorial photographers.
As friends got engaged, married, had families, turned 40, they asked us to record the event. The response was amazing.
The skills of a photo-journalist gave the photographs something different, something unexpected, a bit of “soul”.
We don't use a studio but work on location, using mainly natural light, to create images that not only look beautiful, but evoke the personality of the individual, the atmosphere of an event, the character of a place.
As Ansel Adams put it, "Some photographers ... impose the domination of their own thought and spirit. Others come before reality more tenderly and a photograph to them is an instrument of love and revelation." Our aim is to provide the latter.
And so far it seems to have been working! In what has been a difficult year for everyone we've had commissions from Scotland to Sussex; been nominated for the international Renaissance Photography Prize; done shoots of ponies, dogs, kids, entire families, weddings, and raised lots of money for charity through our “At Home” exhibitions...
We think our photos appeal because they are less about "style" and more about life - moments of emotion and human connection, moments of physical experience and moments of wonder. And when times are tough memories of those moments are what carry us through.
